Install updates and manage multiple FrameworX versions on the same computer.

FrameworX keeps each release line in its own installation folder, so several versions coexist on the same computer. A letter update, for example 10.1.5a, installs on top of its release line. From FrameworX 10.1.6, a new release line installs side by side with the previous one, and you do not copy installation folders to keep the earlier version.

Version Numbering

  • Major versions: 10.0, 11.0
  • Release lines: 10.1.4, 10.1.5, 10.1.6. Versions 10.1.0 through 10.1.4 are fully compatible, and their solutions open in 10.1.4. 10.1.5 installs side by side with 10.1.4. From FrameworX 10.1.6, 10.1.6 installs side by side with 10.1.5.
  • Letter updates: 10.1.5a, 10.1.5b. A letter update installs on top of its release line and replaces the installed version of that line.
  • Build Number: 10.1.1.1000

Build Number

The Build Number is an internal DevOps control, it is number changes nearly on DAILY basis to track internal development tasks.

It is value doesn't;t have any special meaning for the users, neither reflects the volume of changes, neither updates published.

Installing Updates

Letter update of the same release line (for example 10.1.5a on top of 10.1.5):

  1. Download the update installer.
  2. Run the installer. It replaces the installed version of the same release line.
  3. Solution Center opens the solutions of that release line without an upgrade prompt.

New release line (for example 10.1.6 on a computer with 10.1.5):

  1. Download the installer of the new release line.
  2. Run the installer. From FrameworX 10.1.6, it keeps the existing 10.1.5 installation and installs 10.1.6 side by side with it.
  3. Open a 10.1.5 solution from Solution Center. It asks whether to upgrade the solution to 10.1.6. If you decline, Solution Center opens the solution with the installed 10.1.5 and remembers your choice. To upgrade it later, click Upgrade for that solution in Solution Center.
  4. When you upgrade, FrameworX 10.1.6 saves a backup copy of the solution file before the upgrade. If it fails to write the backup copy, it refuses to open the solution and leaves the file unchanged.

Managing Multiple Versions

From FrameworX 10.1.6, the installer keeps the earlier release line for you. Under the installation folder (default C:\Program Files\Tatsoft\FrameworX\), the active version is in the fx-10 folder, and the previous release line moves to a folder named after its version, for example fx-10.1.5. In 10.1.5, the installer keeps 10.1.4 the same way.

Solution Center opens each solution with the matching version:

  • A solution of the active release line opens directly.
  • A 10.1.5 solution opened from the 10.1.6 Solution Center prompts for an upgrade. If you decline, it opens with the installed 10.1.5. If 10.1.5 is not installed, Solution Center tells you to install 10.1.5 side by side or to upgrade the solution.
  • A 10.1.4 solution prompts for an upgrade the same way. When 10.1.4 is installed, a solution from 10.1.0 through 10.1.3 opens with it, without a prompt.

Note: Each folder is completely self-contained - all assemblies, libraries, and executables needed to run that version.

Important: Shared Files

Critical Consideration: Machine Settings

Multiple versions share one set of global files located in: C:\Users\Public\Documents\FrameworX\MachineSettings\

These include:

  • Solution templates
  • Machine-specific settings
  • License configuration
  • Recent solution lists

Recommendation:

  • Install the latest version normally (runs installer)
  • From FrameworX 10.1.6, earlier release lines stay installed side by side, with no copied folders
  • Be aware that new solution templates apply to the most recently installed version

Creating Solutions with Older Versions

For older version solutions:

  1. Navigate to older version folder
  2. Locate template in: \Templates\BlankSolution.dbsln
  3. Copy template to your project location
  4. Open with older version's FrameworX.exe
  5. Solution uses that version's runtime

Note: Cannot use Solution Center's "New Solution" for older versions - must manually copy templates.

Version Compatibility Matrix

ScenarioCompatibilityNotes
Open 10.0 solution in 10.1FullAutomatic upgrade prompt
Open 10.1 solution in 10.0LimitedMay lose new features
Run different versions simultaneouslyYesDifferent folders required
Share solutions between versionsCautionTest thoroughly

Best Practices

  • Production Systems: Maintain single version for stability
  • Development Systems: Multiple versions acceptable
  • Testing: Always test solutions after version changes
  • Backup: Archive older version folders before updates
